In this video, Mary Kawar discusses the benefits of occupational therapy collaborating with developmental optometry to address vestibular-visual difficulties.
Adequate functioning of the vestibular and visual systems is key to many aspects of functional participation and engagement in meaningful occupations. In this video, Mary Kawar discusses a research article by Goldstand, Koslowe, and Parush (2005) examining academic performance, reading abilities, and outcomes of visual-perception and visual screening assessments among seventh-grade students.
Goldstand, S., Koslowe, K. C., and Parush, S. (2005). Vision, Visual-Information Processing, and Academic Performance Among Seventh-Grade Schoolchildren: A More Significant Relationship Than We Thought? American Journal of Occupational Therapy, 59(4):377–389. https://doi.org/10.5014/ajot.59.4.377
The development of higher-level performance skills, including reading, writing, and receptive and expressive language, is dependent upon a strong sensorimotor foundation. For many children unidentified difficulties with both the visual and vestibular systems can impact optimal performance. Participants will learn directly from an occupational therapist and developmental optometrist how to capture the subtleties of visual-vestibular dysfunction, thus enhancing participants’ ability to optimize treatment planning.
