SUMMARY:Finding Safety and Stability: A Trauma-Informed Sensory Motor Approach
DESCRIPTION:Therapists and other professionals who work with individuals with sensory and developmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum\, attention deficit\, learning disabilities) often encounter clients with difficulties related to developmental trauma. Traumatic events may be overt\, such as early loss of a primary caregiver; sexual\, physical or emotional abuse; or domestic\, community and school violence. Trauma may also be innocent\, such as early hospitalization and necessary lifesaving medical procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Exposure to adverse life experiences has been shown to increase the likelihood of social\, emotional and developmental delays. Furthermore\, children with developmental delays have a higher risk of being subjected to experiences involving physical\, emotional and sexual abuse. \nThere is a growing understanding\, and accompanying clinical practice that addresses the connection between sensory processing dysfunction and trauma. When an individual cannot adequately process sensory information or traumatic experiences\, the body’s natural defense mechanisms become heightened\, further impacting sensory processing disorder. \nThis live\, one-day\, online course will explore the connections between trauma\, sensory processing and sensory integrative difficulties. Participants will learn how sound and movement are critical in the development of body based\, perceptual motor\, and social emotional foundations for feeling safe in the world and in relationship to another. DESCRIPTION:Therapists and other professionals who work with individuals with sensory and developmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum\, attention deficit\, learning disabilities) often encounter clients with difficulties related to developmental trauma. Traumatic events may be overt\, such as early loss of a primary caregiver; sexual\, physical or emotional abuse; or domestic\, community and school violence. Trauma may also be innocent\, such as early hospitalization and necessary lifesaving medical procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Exposure to adverse life experiences has been shown to increase the likelihood of social\, emotional and developmental delays. Furthermore\, children with developmental delays have a higher risk of being subjected to experiences involving physical\, emotional and sexual abuse. \nThere is a growing understanding\, and accompanying clinical practice that addresses the connection between sensory processing dysfunction and trauma. When an individual cannot adequately process sensory information or traumatic experiences\, the body’s natural defense mechanisms become heightened\, further impacting sensory processing disorder. \nThis live\, one-day\, online course will explore the connections between trauma\, sensory processing and sensory integrative difficulties. Powerfully You provides a lens through which individuals can view themselves and others in a positive light. This lens values strengths\, individual differences\, and sees the whole person from a perspective of compassion and curiosity. \nLessons taught in this curriculum include Body Sensing\, Body Battery\, Body Activation\, Tools and more. DESCRIPTION:The Listening with the Whole Body Course is Just the Beginning.\nJoin the Vital Links Team for the evolution of Therapeutic Listening with the upcoming small group Mentorship series. In this video\, Sheila and Tracy share the background regarding the aim of this series and the goal of partnering with the Vital Links community to support the implementation of Therapeutic Listening among practitioners. We hope you can join us! \n \nCourse Description\nFormalized mentorship opportunities provide a platform for practicing therapists to expand their skills\, participate in rich discussions\, and enhance their clinical reasoning process to ultimately support professional growth and development. This Therapeutic Listening® mentorship series will explore the use and clinical applications of all the Therapeutic Listening libraries among participants who have previously completed the ‘Listening with the Whole Body’ training course. \nParticipants will need to submit one case\, over the course of the series\, where Therapeutic Listening has been utilized as part of a larger treatment protocol. Participants will be encouraged to utilize a provided case presentation template (including initial assessment findings\, key insight gained from the Functional Listening Questionnaire and caregiver/client interview\, and individualized music progressions) to share their own cases and accompanying questions related to the individualized implementation of Therapeutic Listening with their clients. \nTo support the translation of research into practice\, participants will also examine the existing research on Therapeutic Listening and analyze how this information may influence future clinical use of this therapeutic tool. Each session\, instructors will provide adjunct lectures and clinical case examples on topics related to the successful implementation of Therapeutic Listening and expanding clinical reasoning skills\, including case-study examples of how different clinical pictures benefit from different Therapeutic Listening progressions and unique elements of music; identifying and combining complementary therapeutic treatments with Therapeutic Listening; and the importance of understanding state and arousal regulation when matching music. This Therapeutic Listening® mentorship series will explore the use and clinical applications of all the Therapeutic Listening libraries among participants who have previously completed the ‘Listening with the Whole Body’ training course. \nParticipants will need to submit one case\, over the course of the series\, where Therapeutic Listening has been utilized as part of a larger treatment protocol. Participants will be encouraged to utilize a provided case presentation template (including initial assessment findings\, key insight gained from the Functional Listening Questionnaire and caregiver/client interview\, and individualized music progressions) to share their own cases and accompanying questions related to the individualized implementation of Therapeutic Listening with their clients. \nTo support the translation of research into practice\, participants will also examine the existing research on Therapeutic Listening and analyze how this information may influence future clinical use of this therapeutic tool. Each session\, instructors will provide adjunct lectures and clinical case examples on topics related to the successful implementation of Therapeutic Listening and expanding clinical reasoning skills\, including case-study examples of how different clinical pictures benefit from different Therapeutic Listening progressions and unique elements of music; identifying and combining complementary therapeutic treatments with Therapeutic Listening; and the importance of understanding state and arousal regulation when matching music. For individuals who experience difficulties with sensory modulation and sensory processing\, inadequate interoceptive and proprioceptive awareness may contribute to struggles with body awareness\, breath regulation\, adaptable states of arousal\, organized movement and praxis\, and regulation and awareness of homeostatic functions and affective emotion. Effective treatment strategies aim to modulate sensation\, and support proprioceptive and interoceptive balance within the context of meaningful occupational participation. \nDrawing from current science\, this course will explore the neurological and anatomical foundations for proprioception\, interoception\, and vestibular processing. Participants will be encouraged to utilize a provided case presentation template (including initial assessment findings\, key insight gained from the Functional Listening Questionnaire and caregiver/client interview\, and individualized music progressions) to share their own cases and accompanying questions related to the individualized implementation of Therapeutic Listening with their clients. \nTo support the translation of research into practice\, participants will also examine the existing research on Therapeutic Listening and analyze how this information may influence future clinical use of this therapeutic tool. Each session\, instructors will provide adjunct lectures and clinical case examples on topics related to the successful implementation of Therapeutic Listening and expanding clinical reasoning skills\, including case-study examples of how different clinical pictures benefit from different Therapeutic Listening progressions and unique elements of music; identifying and combining complementary therapeutic treatments with Therapeutic Listening; and the importance of understanding state and arousal regulation when matching music.
