SUMMARY:Using Gravity to Facilitate Sensorimotor Development in Infants and Children
DESCRIPTION:Gravity influences infant development in many ways\, from triggering vestibular processing to developing and strengthening muscles. Due to a number of factors\, including improper positioning\, lack of typical sensorimotor opportunities\, other environmental factors\, and/or diagnoses of failure to thrive\, autism\, sensory processing disorders\, etc.\, many of today’s children are delayed in their sensorimotor development when compared with past generations. These delays are particularly apparent in lack of core strength\, proximal stability\, and upper extremity coordination. \nAlong with other treatment strategies\, gravity can be used by therapists to enhance development\, especially in the areas of sensorimotor processing\, reflex integration and motor coordination. A variety of intervention strategies that engage vestibular mechanisms and take advantage of gravitational influences\, including some innovative equipment\, will be discussed and demonstrated via labs and video presentation. \nLocation\nOnline \nSchedule\nFull Agenda \nFriday\, August 12\, 2016\, 8:30am – 4:30pm CDT \nLevel\nIntroductory \nCourse Objectives\nUpon completion of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the role that gravity plays in typical infant development.\nList the ways that positioning and other environmental influences can obstruct or enhance sensorimotor development.\nDemonstrate at least 3-4 strategies to facilitate reflex integration and sensorimotor development.\nDescribe innovative equipment for enhancing sensorimotor development and how to use them.\n\n\n \n Continuing Ed \n \n \nVital Links is an AOTA approved provider of continuing education. SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Approach to Sensory Processing Disorder and Arousal Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric therapists and other professionals who work with individuals with sensory and developmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum\, attention deficit\, learning disabilities) often encounter clients with difficulties related to developmental trauma. Traumatic events may be overt\, such as early loss of a primary caregiver; sexual\, physical or emotional abuse; or domestic\, community and school violence. Trauma may also be innocent\, such as early hospitalization and necessary life saving medical procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Exposure to adverse life experiences has been shown to increase the likelihood of social emotional and developmental delays; furthermore children with developmental delays have a much higher chance of experiencing physical\, emotional and sexual abuse. \nThere is a growing understanding and accompanying clinical practice that addresses the connection between sensory processing dysfunction and trauma. When an individual cannot adequately process sensory information or traumatic experiences\, the body’s natural defense mechanisms become heightened further impacting sensory processing disorder. \nThis two-day hands-on course will explore from a trauma informed perspective the connections between sensory processing and sensory integrative difficulties. We will also provide a brief introduction to the tension reducing technique known as TRE®\, as a means of demonstrating how the body retains stress in core muscular tension patterns. This course will investigate the hardwired action systems that underlie sensory modulation\, arousal\, affect regulation\, and play. A clinical reasoning model for tracking dynamic shifts in state and levels of integration will be presented. Interactive hands-on labs\, video and case presentations will bring key concepts and treatment strategies to life in this theoretically based\, yet practical workshop. \nBy the completion of the course\, participants will be able to:\n\nRecognize when patterns of defense are interfering with function and daily life\nEmploy three body based strategies to decrease tension patterns and regulate arousal\nDesign three play based strategies that support regulation and arousal\, affect and social engagement\n\nDay 1:\nThursday\, February 25\, 2016 – 8:00am – 4:30pm GMT \nDay 2:\nFriday\, February 26\, 2016 – 8:30am – 4:30pm GMT \nRegister Now Online
