SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Approach to Sensory Processing Disorder and Arousal Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric therapists and other professionals who work with individuals with sensory and developmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum\, attention deficit\, learning disabilities) often encounter clients with difficulties related to developmental trauma. Traumatic events may be overt\, such as early loss of a primary caregiver; sexual\, physical or emotional abuse; or domestic\, community and school violence. Trauma may also be innocent\, such as early hospitalization and necessary life saving medical procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Exposure to adverse life experiences has been shown to increase the likelihood of social emotional and developmental delays; furthermore children with developmental delays have a much higher chance of experiencing physical\, emotional and sexual abuse. \nThere is a growing understanding and accompanying clinical practice that addresses the connection between sensory processing dysfunction and trauma. When an individual cannot adequately process sensory information or traumatic experiences\, the body’s natural defense mechanisms become heightened further impacting sensory processing disorder. \nThis two-day hands-on course will explore from a trauma informed perspective the connections between sensory processing and sensory integrative difficulties. We will also provide a brief introduction to the tension reducing technique known as TRE®\, as a means of demonstrating how the body retains stress in core muscular tension patterns. This course will investigate the hardwired action systems that underlie sensory modulation\, arousal\, affect regulation\, and play. A clinical reasoning model for tracking dynamic shifts in state and levels of integration will be presented. Interactive hands-on labs\, video and case presentations will bring key concepts and treatment strategies to life in this theoretically based\, yet practical workshop. \nBy the completion of the course\, participants will be able to:\n\nRecognize when patterns of defense are interfering with function and daily life\nEmploy three body based strategies to decrease tension patterns and regulate arousal\nDesign three play based strategies that support regulation and arousal\, affect and social engagement\n\nDay 1:\nThursday\, February 25\, 2016 – 8:00am – 4:30pm GMT \nDay 2:\nFriday\, February 26\, 2016 – 8:30am – 4:30pm GMT \nRegister Now Online

SUMMARY:Therapeutic Listening: Listening with the Whole Body
DESCRIPTION:Listening plays a vital role in the sensory integration process. In fact\, some believe that the auditory system is the ‘missing link’ in sensory integration modalities. Both research and clinical experience have shown that using sound-based interventions for clients with sensory processing difficulties can increase treatment effectiveness. \nIn this newly revised 2 day workshop\, you will learn to use Therapeutic Listening® modulated audio selections (available on CDs\, digital music players\, and some mobile devices) to create individualized\, home-based programs for clients. This workshop will provide a strong emphasis on practical application and explore the use of Therapeutic Listening within the context of multiple case studies. You will also learn how to implement Therapeutic Listening strategies in conjunction with postural\, respiratory\, and sensory activities. The course will take you through all of the steps–from assessment to outcomes–for creating complete Therapeutic Listening programs. Video case presentations will be used to illustrate points and show changes in individuals with listening and other sensory processing difficulties\, including Autism\, Cerebral Palsy\, apraxia\, anxiety\, and Down’s Syndrome. The online format of this workshop will consist of live video feed of the presenter\, and shared power point and video. Participants will be able to ask questions or make comments verbally via microphone (if your computer allows) or typed into a chat feature. This workshop will be especially meaningful for practitioners who have a background in sensory integration\, including therapists in schools\, hospitals\, and private clinics. Participants will gain the necessary background information to begin using Therapeutic Listening right away. \nSchedule:\nDAY 1:\nSunday\, January 17th\n8:30-9:00am (CST) Check-in and Webinar Orientation\n9:00-4:15pm (CST) Workshop \nDAY 2:\nMonday\, January 18th\n8:30-9:00am (CST) Check-in\n9:00-4:45pm (CST) Workshop (Quiz & Evaluation during final 30-minutes) \nPlease be aware that you will need to adjust the hours to your local timezone. \nInstructor:\nTracy Bjorling\, MS\, OTR \nContinuing Education:\nVital Links is an AOTA approved provider of continuing education. SUMMARY:Introduction to Building Blocks for Sensory Integration
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop provides therapists with an understanding of the developmental and neurophysiological links between sensory integration and the basic primary movement patterns (primitive and postural reflexes) that provide the foundation (or building blocks) for sensory modulation and integration. \nBeginning with support of the primitive reflexes\, we will explore the development of posture and its relationship to self-regulation along with visual and auditory function. This course will allow participants to use their clinical observations for the clients who are often difficult to test using standard measures. Video examples will highlight treatment strategies that can be implemented with and without therapy equipment\, making them appropriate for all clinical settings. \nA range of intervention strategies designed to support functional performance will be presented\, and workshop participants will leave with a systematic way to assess\, document and treat the movement challenges that arise from the lack of effective sensory motor integration. \nCourse Objectives\nUpon completion of this workshop\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the link between reflex integration\, postural development\, sensory modulation\, and behavioral challenges.\nBe able to evaluate primitive and postural reflex development\, and be able to recognize its impact on daily function.\nBe able to develop simple yet powerful strategies for integration across multiple environments.\n\nContinuing Education\n  \nVital Links is approved by The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) as a provider of continuing education. This workshop provides 6 contact hours or 0.6 AOTA CEUs. \nLevel: Introductory \nAOTA Classification Code: Client Factors\, Performance Skills\, & Intervention \nThe assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content\, products\, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
