SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Approach to Sensory Processing Disorder and Arousal Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Pediatric therapists and other professionals who work with individuals with sensory and developmental disorders (e.g. autism spectrum\, attention deficit\, learning disabilities) often encounter clients with difficulties related to developmental trauma. Traumatic events may be overt\, such as early loss of a primary caregiver; sexual\, physical or emotional abuse; or domestic\, community and school violence. Trauma may also be innocent\, such as early hospitalization and necessary life saving medical procedures in the neonatal intensive care unit. Exposure to adverse life experiences has been shown to increase the likelihood of social emotional and developmental delays; furthermore children with developmental delays have a much higher chance of experiencing physical\, emotional and sexual abuse. \nThere is a growing understanding and accompanying clinical practice that addresses the connection between sensory processing dysfunction and trauma. When an individual cannot adequately process sensory information or traumatic experiences\, the body’s natural defense mechanisms become heightened further impacting sensory processing disorder. \nThis two-day hands-on course will explore from a trauma informed perspective the connections between sensory processing and sensory integrative difficulties. We will also provide a brief introduction to the tension reducing technique known as TRE®\, as a means of demonstrating how the body retains stress in core muscular tension patterns. This course will investigate the hardwired action systems that underlie sensory modulation\, arousal\, affect regulation\, and play. A clinical reasoning model for tracking dynamic shifts in state and levels of integration will be presented. Interactive hands-on labs\, video and case presentations will bring key concepts and treatment strategies to life in this theoretically based\, yet practical workshop. \nBy the completion of the course\, participants will be able to:\n\nRecognize when patterns of defense are interfering with function and daily life\nEmploy three body based strategies to decrease tension patterns and regulate arousal\nDesign three play based strategies that support regulation and arousal\, affect and social engagement\n\nDay 1:\nThursday\, February 25\, 2016 – 8:00am – 4:30pm GMT \nDay 2:\nFriday\, February 26\, 2016 – 8:30am – 4:30pm GMT \n\n \n Register Now Online

SUMMARY:Sharpening Focus: Fine Tuning Therapeutic Listening Progressions to Address Attention\, Learning and Praxis Difficulties
DESCRIPTION:Required Pre-requisite course:\nParticipants must have completed Therapeutic Listening: Listening with the Whole Body. \n\n‘Sharpening Focus’ takes you beyond the basics of matching music and teaches an understanding of the specific use and application of a variety of electronic modifications of sound. This course will assist the therapist trained in the basics of modulated music to gain a deeper appreciation of how difficulties with audition and auditory processing disrupt attention\, learning\, and praxis. All aspects of advanced use of Therapeutic Listening® libraries will be explored\, from assessment to clinically reasoned album selection\, along with treatment progressions\, and problems solving potential difficulties as they arise. \nWhile the focus will be on the Fine Tuning libraries\, we will also discuss clinically reasoning when to use selections from the various libraries (Modulated\, Fine Tuning\, Spatially Enhanced and Quickshifts) as well as how to effectively blend them into an individualized treatment protocol. In addition\, we will address the understanding of the use of both passive and active bone conduction and its relevance to sensory integrative difficulties. \nAfter completing this course\, participants will be able to:\n\nMake appropriate Fine Tuning Mountain album selections and choose a musical progression based on the client’s individual clinical picture.\nDesign a comprehensive Therapeutic Listening musical progression that includes the use of a variety of sound tools to support specific functional outcomes.\n\n\n \n Register Now Online

SUMMARY:Introduction to Building Blocks for Sensory Integration
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop provides therapists with an understanding of the developmental and neurophysiological links between sensory integration and the basic primary movement patterns (primitive and postural reflexes) that provide the foundation (or building blocks) for sensory modulation and integration. \nBeginning with support of the primitive reflexes\, we will explore the development of posture and its relationship to self-regulation along with visual and auditory function. This course will allow participants to use their clinical observations for the clients who are often difficult to test using standard measures. Video examples will highlight treatment strategies that can be implemented with and without therapy equipment\, making them appropriate for all clinical settings. \nA range of intervention strategies designed to support functional performance will be presented\, and workshop participants will leave with a systematic way to assess\, document and treat the movement challenges that arise from the lack of effective sensory motor integration. \nCourse Objectives\nUpon completion of this workshop\, you will: \n\nUnderstand the link between reflex integration\, postural development\, sensory modulation\, and behavioral challenges.\nBe able to evaluate primitive and postural reflex development\, and be able to recognize its impact on daily function.\nBe able to develop simple yet powerful strategies for integration across multiple environments.\n\nContinuing Education\n  \nVital Links is approved by The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) as a provider of continuing education. This workshop provides 6 contact hours or 0.6 AOTA CEUs. \nLevel: Introductory \nAOTA Classification Code: Client Factors\, Performance Skills\, & Intervention \nThe assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content\, products\, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
